Open beta: we're opening the gates

2022-11-18 · From the vault

Closed beta taught us what we needed. Open beta is the next step. We're opening registration; we're not promising no downtime. We're promising we'll keep building. Details and dates inside.

We're opening the gates. That means more people, more load, and more surface area for everything that can go wrong. We're not promising no downtime. We're promising we'll keep building—and that we've thought about what happens when a world scales from "early adopters" to "everyone who wants in."

What we're ready for

Reliability: we've got redundancy, failover, and the kind of operational discipline that lets us attribute failures and fix them. Safety: as the world gets more social, safety becomes a first-order engineering problem. Text moderation was the start; voice and behavior at scale are harder. We're investing in systems that can assess risk, enforce norms, and protect participants without turning the place into a surveillance state. We'll get the balance wrong sometimes. We're committed to correcting.

What we're not promising

No downtime. No "finished" product. We're opening because we believe the world is ready for more people—and because we learn faster with you in it. Details and dates in the announcement. Thank you for being here. Let's go.
